The guy who
got hurt
became the coach
I moved to Los Angeles, California many, many years ago with the hopes that I was going to become the next action movie star. I know it sounds funny — don't laugh. Things were rolling out. I actually got a part in a movie.
Then I was injured by my trainer. Things got pretty ugly after that. I felt like I lost everything. I was homeless, living in the back of a pickup truck in the city I came to conquer.
I decided that I didn't want what happened to me to happen to anyone else. And I figured, hey, I know I could be better than the guy that hurt me. So I decided to become a personal trainer.
That was thirty years ago. Since then NCEP has grown into two things at once: training people directly, and certifying the trainers who will work with everybody I will never meet. We take a holistic approach to functional fitness, and what makes us different is that we actually care about our students. We still teach live events all throughout the United States, and we will never give this up.
Coaching a life that won't slow down
I coach the way a parent has to live: no perfect conditions, small windows of time, showing up tired anyway. Nobody I work with has a clean week. They have a job, a commute, a kid awake at five in the morning, and a body that has opinions about all three. So the plan is built to bend. If the week collapses we keep five minutes of mobility and one honest walk, and the streak survives. That is not a lowered standard — it is the only standard that lasts thirty years.
The people I most want in the room are total beginners, especially the ones in their twenties who want to make this a career. A beginner hasn't been taught yet that pain is progress. We get to build everything on a level floor. And when one of them walks out of a live certification and never hurts a client the way I was hurt, that is the whole point of the last three decades.
